SYNOPSIS
Neighbors, youngsters and unemployed workers chat inside a bar between cigarettes, breakasts and snacks. They remember unusual dreams, share job stories and plan future projects. The bar is located in the city of Cartagena, in the southeast of Spain. As the day goes on, the riots from the industrial crisis of 1992 are heard more and more closely.
In 1992 in Spain the Barcelona Olympic Games and the Seville Expo were held, linked to the celebration of the 5th Centenary of the Discovery of America. The country is presented to the international community as a modern, developed and dynamic country. Meanwhile in Cartagena, the protests because of the crisis became increasingly violent and would result in a mass uprising that culminate in the burning of the parliament of the Autonomous Community.

BIOGRAPHY
Luis López Carrasco was born in Spain in 1981. In 2008 he co-founded Los Hijos, an experimental cinema and documentary collective, with Javier Fernández Vázquez and Natalia Marín Sancho. SYNOPSIS

The RER B is an urban train that traverses Paris and its environs from north to south. Multiaward-winning documentary filmmaker Alice Diop takes us through these suburban spaces and confronts us with some of the faces and stories of which they are composed.
A moving testament to the importance of filming as a process of bearing witness and remembering, Nous is timely in many ways. It is subtle and shrewd in a world which favours shortcuts and easy answers. Justifiably adopting the fragmented structure of a patchwork portrait in order to describe a riven society, Diop displays impressive control of her essay and its impact. In the film’s first few minutes, a deer is observed, through binoculars. A certain sense of awkward, man-made distance stays with us. Isolation, discrimination and nostalgia for hierarchies, inherited from a monarchical past… Divisions haunt France’s present. But the human urge to give as well as to receive stubbornly creeps into every situation, observed or triggered. Could this be the one thing that still keeps a nation together?

BIOGRAPHY
Alice Diop was born in Aulnay-sous-Bois, France. Her films, which question French society and its cultural diversity, have screened at festivals including Cinéma du Réel in Paris, BFI London, Karlovy Vary, the Viennale and the documentary film festival in Lussas, France. Her feature-length documentary ON CALL won the main prize at Cinéma du Réel while her short film TOWARDS TENDERNESS won the 2017 César French film prize for Best Short Film

SYNOPSIS

Sonja was one of the first female partisan in Serbia and helped lead the resistance in Auschwitz. When we initially encounter her in LANDSCAPES OF RESISTANCE, she is a friendly elderly lady with a playful cat on her lap. This is the start of an exceptional journey through her memories of revolutionary books from her student days, her wedding to a communist, the resistance against the German occupiers and her torture after capture as a communist and anti-fascist fighter, right the way through to her escape from the concentration camp.
Archival material is conspicuously absent. Sonja also makes scant appearances. While we hear her voice-over, the camera travels to spots the stories could have taken place. A landscape is given Sonja’s voice: grass and trees, a crack in the wall, slates off an old farm shed, a pool of water, deer grazing in the distance, even the chimney that is still standing. Sometimes images are augmented by drawings and journal-like entries from Sonja’s granddaughter, who also wrote this film’s script.

BIOGRAPHY

Her work explores tensions between memory and history, collective and individual bodies, and ideology and everyday life, with a focus on antifascist and feminist potentialities of the Yugoslav socialist project. The film is part of the permanent collection of MoMA New York, and it’s featured in What Is Contemporary Art? MoMA’s online course about contemporary art from 1980 to the present. Her work has also featured in major art galleries, such as Tate Modern London, MoMA New York, M HKA Antwerp, Museum of Modern Art Ljubljana, etc. Popivoda received the prestigious Berlin Art Prize for the visual arts by Akademie der Künste Berlin and Edith-Russ-Haus Award for Emerging Media Artist. SYNOPSIS
Where does one feel at home? In Stadtallendorf, a German city with a complex history of both excluding and integrating foreigners, genial teacher Dieter Bachmann offers his pupils the key to at least feeling as if they are at home. Aged between twelve and fourteen, these pupils come from twelve different nations; some have not quite mastered the German language. On the brink of retirement, Bachmann is eager to inspire these citizens-in-the-making with a sense of curiosity for a wide range of crafts, subjects, cultures and opinions. Watching this absorbing, sensitive documentary, one is overwhelmed with the realisation that, if only all children were blessed with such emotionally intelligent, ever-patient educators, conflict would be mitigated via discussion and John Lennon’s “Imagine” could be our reality. Those who, like filmmaker Maria Speth and her cinematographer Reinhold Vorschneider, are able to recognise and highlight so beautifully not only the importance of education but also what a quietly spectacular process it can be, are heroes in their own right, too.(Berlinale Competition)

BIOGRAPHY
Born in Bavaria, Germany in 1967, Maria Speth has lived in Berlin since 1987. She worked as an assistant editor and director until 1995. In 1996, she took up a directing degree at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf. In 2001, she directed her multi-award-winning debut feature film THE DAYS BETWEEN. Her second feature, MADONNAS, premiered in the Forum and won the 2007 Hessian Film Award. In 2009, she founded the Madonnen Film production company and made her first documentary, 9 Lives, for which she won the Metropolis German Directors Award. Her work most recently featured in the Forum in 2014 with DAUGHTERS.
