with Anne Jung (medico international) and Lydia Cairncross (C19 People’s Coalition, Südafrika)
On 11 March 2020, the global spread of COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. 18 months later, the virus is still not under control. Medically, it is clear: the COVID-19 pandemic is not over until it is over for everyone – worldwide. But instead of making vaccines and medical supplies available to as many people as possible, as quickly and as cheaply as possible, all over the world, European governments are leaving it up to the pharmaceutical industry to decide who produces how many vaccine doses. NIHRFF director Andrea Kuhn talks to Anne Jung, global health officer at the aid and human rights organisation medico international, and South African doctor Lydia Cairncross from the C19 People’s Coalition about the political handling of the pandemic and practices of solidarity in action.

Appropriation Takes You on a Weird Ride investigates the strange German enthusiasm for Native Americans in relation to contemporary racism and its deep colonial roots. This fascination, especially with regard to the construction of a german identity, has a rather frightening than impressive chronology: it begins with the first-century Germanic Cherusci chieftan Arminius and stretches to the adventure novels of Karl May and the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Shows in the 1800s, through the ethnographic exhibitions (Völkerschauen) in zoos and circuses and founding of “Indian clubs” at the turn of the twentieth century, onward to the appropriation of Indigenous identities by Nazi ideologists, up until the present day, when new rightwing groups have developed an unsettling identification with the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas.
Leipzig, 1996. The receptionist shows the White Suite at the Hotel Astoria. She says she still has hope that a guardian angel will save the Astoria. But seven years after the fall of the Wall, the curtain also falls on the legendary hotel. Political change of the late 1980s was also felt at the Astoria. Memories of this exclusive place are brought to life through a mixture of archive material and animation. We learn about the hard work in hospitality and the absurdities of everyday life in the GDR, about turtle soup in a country that was known for an economy of scarcity, and about the hotel bar where prostitutes, tourists, and Stasi agents had their drinks. These contradictions are also reflected in the statements of the staff and guests. Some recall a culture of fear, while others describe it as the best time of their lives. The film shows that different historical experiences can coexist – that‘s where you find the grey areas between propaganda and reality. Because truth is a matter of opinion.

SYNOPSIS Neighbors, youngsters and unemployed workers chat inside a bar between cigarettes, breakasts and snacks. They remember unusual dreams, share job stories and plan future projects. The bar is located in the city of Cartagena, in the southeast of Spain. As the day goes on, the riots from the industrial crisis of 1992 are heard more and more closely. In 1992 in Spain the Barcelona Olympic Games and the Seville Expo were held, linked to the celebration of the 5th Centenary of the Discovery of America. The country is presented to the international community as a modern, developed and dynamic country. Meanwhile in Cartagena, the protests because of the crisis became increasingly violent and would result in a mass uprising that culminate in the burning of the parliament of the Autonomous Community.
BIOGRAPHY Luis López Carrasco was born in Spain in 1981. In 2008 he co-founded Los Hijos, an experimental cinema and documentary collective, with Javier Fernández Vázquez and Natalia Marín Sancho. SYNOPSIS Without solidarity, hope would long since have died. The borders in the Italian-French Roya valley have been closed since 2015. Countless refugees try in vain to leave the Italian town of Ventimiglia for France and are sent back again and again. But the liberal inhabitants of this stubborn region refuse to settle for this. Together they oppose the law, shelter young migrants, provide them with bread behind the backs of the police – plainly doing everything to give these people a future. So in the foggy gorges far from the great European metropolises there is a community that stands together and just wants to help, resists – out of love of their homeland, out of human kindness, out of the shared belief in a world where we can live together peacefully and which is worth fighting for. WORDS OF BANDITS shows an oasis of hope. A film about arriving, progressing and approaching each other. (Julia Weigl, DOK Leipzig)

The family has recently emigrated to the USA from Mexico, and while Lucía tries to finance their new life by doing odd jobs, the two brothers spend their days in their sparsely furnished one-room flat. The walls of the room, which they are forbidden to leave, become a projection screen for imaginative adventures and open a window on their new life. The RER B is an urban train that traverses Paris and its environs from north to south. Multiaward-winning documentary filmmaker Alice Diop takes us through these suburban spaces and confronts us with some of the faces and stories of which they are composed. A moving testament to the importance of filming as a process of bearing witness and remembering, Nous is timely in many ways. It is subtle and shrewd in a world which favours shortcuts and easy answers. Justifiably adopting the fragmented structure of a patchwork portrait in order to describe a riven society, Diop displays impressive control of her essay and its impact. In the film’s first few minutes, a deer is observed, through binoculars. A certain sense of awkward, man-made distance stays with us. Isolation, discrimination and nostalgia for hierarchies, inherited from a monarchical past… Divisions haunt France’s present. But the human urge to give as well as to receive stubbornly creeps into every situation, observed or triggered. Could this be the one thing that still keeps a nation together?
BIOGRAPHY Alice Diop was born in Aulnay-sous-Bois, France. Her films, which question French society and its cultural diversity, have screened at festivals including Cinéma du Réel in Paris, BFI London, Karlovy Vary, the Viennale and the documentary film festival in Lussas, France. Her feature-length documentary ON CALL won the main prize at Cinéma du Réel while her short film TOWARDS TENDERNESS won the 2017 César French film prize for Best Short Film

In 2002, after a night spent avoiding the dangers of Colombia’s ongoing unrest, José arrives home to dreadful news: “They took them away”, he is informed by his sobbing daughter; with this, he knows without doubt that his two sons are dead, their corpses disposed of in the river that provides the family’s livelihood. So begins a terrible journey, as José goes in search of the bodies of his murdered boys. Along the way, he encounters occasional kindnesses, the constant threat of violence, and – perhaps – the intercession of saints. With its precise portrayal of intense fear and grief ensconced in an odyssey that somehow remains disturbingly placid, Valley of Souls is a plea for peace in a society still rent by civil strife.

INHALT Transgender/Trans*-Menschen bezeichnet Menschen, deren Geschlechtsmerkmale nicht mit ihrem gefühlten Geschlecht, dem sogenannten Identitätsgeschlecht, übereinstimmen. TRANS – I GOT LIFE stellt sieben verschiedene Menschen vor, bei denen genau dies zutrifft.
