Synopsis

THE COURT OF HISTORY is set against the backdrop of a fictional court in a future Iran following the end of the Islamic Republic. The film paints a picture of a society that holds to account those who wielded power during the Islamic Republic and examines their responsibility for human rights violations. However, the film goes beyond the courtroom and raises broader questions: How does a society come to terms with decades of oppression? What does accountability mean in the wake of systematic human rights violations? And what might justice look like in a future democratic Iran?

At its core, THE COURT OF HISTORY examines the fundamental principles of transitional justice, legal accountability, and the rule of law, while emphasizing the crucial distinction between the pursuit of justice and the pursuit of revenge.

Jamshid Barzegar

Biography

Jamshid Barzegar is the head of Deutsche Welle’s “Farsi Editorial Department” and an Iranian poet, writer, and journalist. He has been working as a journalist since 1991, and his first book was published in 1994. His last professional position in Iran was as editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Hambastegi.” He has published four collections of poetry, dozens of short stories and literary reviews, as well as hundreds of articles and political analyses. He has also directed seven documentary films about the lives and poetic works of contemporary Iranian poets. He is the brother of the well-known Iranian director and producer Majid Barzegar. He has been working as the head of the Farsi editorial department at Deutsche Welle since January 2018.
