Day of the persecuted lawyer 2023 – QA with Bernhard Docke

Screening “Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush”

QA with human rights lawyer Bernhard Docke and festival director Andrea Kuhn

Tuesday, January 24, 2023, 6:30 pm at Arena-Saal, Cinecittà Nürnberg

free admission

Since 2015, an annual event has been held on 24 January on the Day of the Persecuted Lawyer on the initiative of the Nuremberg Lawyers’ Group at Amnesty International to draw attention to the fate of persecuted colleagues in particular and also to draw attention to the threat to the rule of law abroad, but also at home.

This year we will be showing the film ‘Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush’ followed by a film discussion between Andrea Kuhn, director of the Human Rights Film Festival, and human rights lawyer Bernhard Docke. The screening will take place at 18:30 in the Arena-Saal, admission is free.

Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush

Germany, France 2022, 118 Min., directed by: Andreas Dresen, Cast: Alexander Scheer, Charly Hübner, Meltem Kaptan

Murat is gone. Imprisoned in the US detention centre in Guantanamo.

Rabiye Kurnaz, a housewife and loving mother from Bremen, no longer understands the world. She goes to the police, informs the authorities and almost despairs at her powerlessness. Until she finds Bernhard Docke. The reserved, level-headed human rights lawyer and the spirited Turkish mother – they now fight side by side for Murat’s release.

Paper is patient, but Rabiye is not. All she really wants is to return to her family in her terraced house and yet she is catapulted into world history again and again. She goes all the way to the Supreme Court in Washington with Bernhard to file a lawsuit against George W. Bush. Bernhard keeps an eye on her. And Rabiye makes him laugh. With heart and soul. With his last ounce of strength.
And in the end, what no one thinks is possible happens.

‘Rabiye Kurnaz vs George W. Bush’ is the seventh joint film by Andreas Dresen (director) and Laila Stieler (screenplay). A film about law and arbitrariness. A film about people who rise above themselves. Meltem Kaptan makes her cinema debut as Rabiye Kurnaz with overwhelming presence and earthy everyday humour. Alexander Scheer plays the human rights lawyer Bernhard Docke with patient restraint. Other roles are played by Charly Hübner, Nazmi Kirik and Sevda Polat. ‘Rabiye Kurnaz vs George W. Bush’ was awarded the Silver Bear for the screenplay and the leading actress at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival in 2022.

Understanding the pain of others – Holocaust and world memory
Reading and discussion with Charlotte Wiedemann

December 7, 2022, 7.30 pm
Künstlerhaus, Königstr. 93, Nürnberg, Glasbau 2nd floor

Cultures of remembrance are characterised by the global power structure; some genocides remain in the backyard of world history. Millions of colonial soldiers fought against Nazi Germany, but to this day we do not associate the liberation from National Socialism with the freedom and dignity of the colonised people. Parallel to the Nuremberg Trials, crimes against humanity were committed in the colonies that were never prosecuted. Which victims are close to us, which remain distant and silent?

In her latest book, Charlotte Wiedemann – publicist, foreign reporter and author of numerous books – looks for ways to rethink the culture of remembrance in the spirit of global justice. To this end, she brings two personal concerns into a dialogue: Preserving sensitivity and responsibility for the Shoa and overcoming Eurocentric historical thinking.
