SYNOPSIS

Shortly after the attacks of September 11, 2001, 19-year-old Murat Kurnaz from Bremen is arrested on suspicion of terrorism and held without charge for 5 years in the US prison camp Guantánamo. The film is based on this true story and tells the story of Murat’s mother Rabiye’s tireless and protracted struggle for Murat’s release. When she sees her son on the news, she has no idea of the complex legal and diplomatic entanglements Murat is caught up in. Above all, the special military status of Guantánamo and the unwillingness of German politicians and authorities make Rabiye’s fight seem almost hopeless. In the lawyer Bernhard Docke, she finds a supporter who, together with her, fights for the rule of law “inch by inch” and even takes the case to the US Supreme Court.

“RABIYE KURNAZ VS. GEORGE W. BUSH is an optimistic story about justice, friendship and enormous perseverance. At the same time, the film shines a spotlight on a political scandal for which no one responsible has apologized to this day.” SWR 2 Kultur aktuell
