Marlene Streeruwitz is one of the most important contemporary German-language authors. In her novels, essays, radio plays and theatre pieces, she is a master at dissecting the grammar of patriarchy and political and personal power constellations in her very own language. Time and again, she takes a stand on Austrian politics and the shift to the right in our societies.

Marlene Streeruwitz will discuss art and politics with festival director Andrea Kuhn – how can one communicate politically when the form of expression has always ideologically moulded the message? How does the idea of a ‘message’ relate to artistic creation at all? Are compromises possible or even necessary, and if so, which ones?

Afterwards, Marlene Streeruwitz will read from her current novel “Flammenwand. Roman mit Anmerkungen”, which was published by S. Fischer Verlag in May. Uncompromisingly, with humour and verve, but also with a good dose of anger, she tells of the decay of a relationship and at the same time describes current Austrian politics. According to one reviewer, the novel is “an unsparing story at the right time”
