SYNOPSIS

Irka, who is heavily pregnant, lives with her husband Tolik in a village in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. Fighting is taking place there in July 2014. A wall in the living room of their house is missing; it has fallen victim to the fighting and provides a view of the barren landscape that is becoming a theater of war. Still, Irka does not want to leave her home. While Tolik’s separatist friends expect him to join their fight, Irka’s brother accuses him of betraying Ukraine. In her powerful and stylish family drama, director Maryna Er Gorbach skillfully weaves together the personal and political histories of the fighting in Ukraine and, with a carefully probing camera and outstanding actors, vividly depicts the horror of war, which here takes place mostly outside the frame of the picture and yet repeatedly breaks into the home.
