SYNOPSIS

In A CIAMBRA, a small Romani community in Calabria, Pio Amato is desperate to grow up fast. At 14, he drinks, smokes and is one of the few to easily slide between the region’s factions – the local Italians, the African refugees and his fellow Romani. Pio follows his older brother Cosimo everywhere, learning the necessary skills for life on the streets of their hometown. When Cosimo disappears and things start to go wrong, Pio sets out to prove he’s ready to step into his big brother’s shoes but soon finds himself
faced with an impossible decision that will show if he is truly ready to become a man.
Jonas Carpignano’s second feature-length film, whose funding was secured by Martin Scorsese himself, gives a precise insight into the different cultures of Calabria. Many of the actors play themselves, amplifying the differences. Carpignano met Pio Amato and the rest of his family when he was and the rest of Amato family when he was working on his first film MEDITERRANEA. It was one of the highlights at Cannes this year.

JONAS CARPIGNANO

onas Carpignano, born 1984, spends his childhood between Rome and New York City, studying film at NYU. His films often deal with migration to and xenophobia in Italy. His short films A Chjàna (2012) and A Ciambra (2014), which he now turned into a feature film, won major international awards, including Venice and Cannes. His debut feature Mediterranea was screened at NIHRFF 2015.
