SYNOPSIS

Madonna made the New York ballroom scene world-famous over 25 years ago with her legendary Vogue video. At spectacular balls, black and Hispanic dancers fought for recognition in the queer subculture of the big city with their very own dance style. The subculture of yesteryear has now become youth support programmes in which dance is used to instil self-confidence and pride in gay, lesbian and transgender young people. ‘The city, structures and gender awareness may have changed since the 1980s, but the longing for acceptance and a safe place where everyone can celebrate their uniqueness has remained.’ (Berlinale)
