Accompanying Programme 2017

Vanessa Redgrave opening NIHRFF 10
A great honour for Germany’s largest human rights film festival: none other than international star and Oscar winner Vanessa Redgrave will open the 10th International Nuremberg Human Rights Film Festival on 27 September 2017. For this anniversary, Redgrave will be bringing her first directorial work SEA SORROW, which will celebrate its German premiere in the Tafelhalle that evening.
Vanessa Redgrave is an activist and Oscar-winning global star. She has been able to combine her outstanding acting talents and art with her convincing political commitment like almost
no other actor. She has no fears as either an activist or an actor. She always gives her all, allowing herself to be vulnerable while remaining authentic. Dietrich Garlichs, the former head of the German UNICEF committee once described her thus: „Vanessa Redgrave is a great artist who does not accept the world as it is. She has the
courage to provoke and the freedom to not be co-opted.“
Vanessa Redgrave acquired widespread fame while playing with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the early 1960s. She played with many other theater companies and soon started starring in films as well, including in Antonioni‘s BLOW UP in 1966 which marked her international breakthrough. In 1966, she also received her first Oscar nomination. She has since been nominated five more times and in 1977 she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Fred Zinnemann‘s JULIA. She has been unforgettable in over 100 films, including HOWARDS END, WETHERBY, MRS. DALLOWAY.
Vanessa Redgrave started supporting refugees in Britain back in her student days when they came mainly from Hungary. She has not given up since, although these days they are more likely to be from Syria and Eritrea than Hungary. As a Trotskyist in the 1960s and 1970s, she organized demonstrations against the Vietnam War. Later she went on to protest against nuclear arms, against the occupation of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and against the Iran War. In 1995, she became a UNICEF ambassador. She has been an outspoken critic of the so-called „War on Terror“ and regularly
proffers her opinion on politics and society in both her home country Britain and the rest of the world.
