SYNOPSIS

Evelien, spastically paralysed since birth, discovers lingerie, sex toys and the pleasures of her own body for the first time in her middle years. After a lifetime of mainly clinical touch, she longs for her first satisfying sexual experience. To achieve this, she embarks on a journey of self-awareness, from a visit to the sex shop to making contact with a specialised sex worker.

SEXUAL HEALING offers an intimate look at the intersections of sexuality, disability and gender and sheds light on experiences that are often excluded from social discourse. Director Elsbeth Fraanje always accompanies her heroine at eye level as an empathetic accomplice, allowing us to share in Evelien’s lustful journey of discovery.

There will be a film discussion with director Elsbeth Fraanje and protagonist Evelien Spreizter after the screening on Saturday, October 19.

In addition to her work as a director, Elsbeth is a curator and programme maker at European Short Film Festival Go Short. She is an alumnus of the IDFA Academy and Kids Docs Workshop.
