Description

For 14 years, Oscar-nominated director Hanna Polak followed Yula as she grew up on Europe’s largest rubbish dump. 20 kilometres from the Kremlin, in what is actually the forbidden zone of Svalka, she lives with her alcoholic mother in the midst of filth and misery. She wants nothing more than to be able to leave the dump one day and live a normal life. But her reality is still different: Between rubbish, violence and adulterated booze, she loses her father, experiences her first love and tries to be a normal teenager. Despite all the horrors, she never loses her light-heartedness and her courage to face life…

Hannah Polak’s long-term observation has been honoured at festivals around the world and received numerous awards. From the jury statement of the Munich Documentary Film Festival, main prize: ‘For the filmmaker’s 14 years of tireless commitment to the inhabitants of the Moscow rubbish dump. For the special access to the protagonists. For impressive images. For an insight into the political and social context of Russian society. For the combination of many levels into a work of art.’

Winning film of the Open Eyes Youth Jury Award 2015.
