Nuria, 12, Fabio, 9, and their mother Amparo arrive in a small island in the middle of Amazonia, at the border of Brazil, Colombia and Peru. They ran away from the Colombian armed conflict in which their father disappeared. One day, he reappears in their new house. The family is haunted by this strange secret and discovers the island is peopled with ghosts.

In THE SILENCES, Beatriz Seigner uses poetry and beautiful imagery to tell of the wounds of the civil war, of the grief of survivors and the solidarity of the indigenous peoples. With ease, she is able to breathe something natural into the supernatural. The way she combines fantastical dream worlds with the reality of refugees in the Amazon is wonderful. This magical realism is full of humanity!

Beatriz Seigner is a Brazilian screenwriter and director. In 2009, she directed Bollywood Dream, the first coproduction between Brazil and India, which has been selected in over 20 international film festivals, for example in Busan, Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles and São Paulo. The Silences is her 2nd feature. Seigner has also directed a documentary, Between Us, A Secret, which is currently in post-production and deals with African griots, co-written by Walter Salles.
