Synopsis

When a massive flood sweeps away a cat’s habitat, she manages to save herself by climbing onto a floating boat, where she encounters other animals seeking shelter: a thieving lemur, a good-natured, playful dog, a proud secretary bird and a sleepy capybara. They couldn’t be more different, but only together can they face the challenges of their new world.

In his Oscar®-winning animated film, Gints Zilbalodis refrains from humanising the animals and does without dialogue entirely. The focus is on the interaction between the animals, who must get along in order to survive. In this way, Flow opens up space for empathy as well as interpretations on the subject of climate and the environment.

Biography

Gints Zilbalodis is a Latvian filmmaker, animator and composer. He studied multimedia design at the Janis Rozentāls Academy of Fine Arts in Riga and initially made seven short films based on various techniques – including hand-drawn animation and 3D animation based on real footage, often mixing their aesthetic features. His first feature film AWAY, which he created and directed entirely by himself, won the Prix Contrechamp for best feature film in Annecy. FLOW is his second feature-length film and celebrated its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section. The work has received several awards worldwide, including an Oscar, a Golden Globe and two Annie Awards.
