Freedom of the Press in Russia and Europe
When purchasing a ticket for the first part of the film, the second part and the panel discussion can be attended free of charge. The second part and the panel discussion can also be booked independently of the first part.
In her gripping documentary MY UNDESIRABLE FRIENDS: PART I – LAST AIR IN MOSCOW, director Yulia Loktev takes us into the heart of a courageous TV editorial team that is under enormous pressure in Putin’s Russia. With the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, they have to fear for their freedom. While there is no longer a free press in Russia, freedom of the press is also under threat from various sides in Europe and Germany: in Hungary and Poland, for example, right-wing populist governments have brought the independent media under their control with tremendous speed. In Germany, journalists are increasingly becoming the target of right-wing activities. But with Hamas’ attack on Israel and the start of the war in Gaza, demonstrators and the media are confronted with restrictions on freedom of expression.
The situation in Russia and Europe will be discussed by the film protagonists and creators of the Russian podcast “Hi, You’re A Foreign Agent”, Sonya Groysman and Olga Churakova, and Paula Zimmermann (expert on freedom of expression and assembly at Amnesty International Germany). The moderator will be Georg Escher (freelance journalist, Relevanzreporter). The discussion will be held in English.
