SYNOPSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are the first generation to hand over the control over our own freedom to computers. But how much freedom are we prepared to give up for the promise of total security? A term originally coined by science fiction author Philip K. Dick, \u201cpre-crime\u201d is a policing technique now used in both the US and Europe to identify \u201chot people\u201d\u2014those most likely to be victims or perpetrators of a crime. Forecasting software and algorithms that have been criticized as inaccurate and arbitrary are used to collect information, and monitor and flag people. But it isn\u2019t the algorithms we should worry about, but the social players that can use the growing flood of data algorithmically for their own goals: security, consumption, control, surveillance, forecasts etc. (and do so) without the slightest democratic control of the use of these technologies.

Monika Hielscher<\/strong> and Matthias Heeder<\/strong> have been making documentary films together for more than 20 years. Their primary focus is on investigative documentaries with strong story-telling; their body of work includes theatrical and TV docs for ARD, ZDF, ARTE and others. They are based in Hamburg, Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
