In between NIHRFF festival editions, Open Eyes offers a one-day film studies training and workshop for teachers. The aim is to strengthen the film competence of teachers, so the discussions initiated by Open Eyes can be continued in the classroom with appropriate expertise. Topics in the past were amongst others \u201cA Concise Guide to Film Dramaturgy,\u201d \u201cThe Documentary Film: Between Staging and Reality,\u201d \u201cCinematic Narrative,\u201d \u201cThe Holocaust in Fiction and Documentary Films,\u201d and \u201cBetween Empowerment and Exploitation: The Documentary Film and Its Protagonists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Open Eyes trainings are officially recognised by the state and are open to teachers from all over Bavaria who want to incorporate film into their lessons. They are usually held in German.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, young people primarily engage with films and television through streaming platforms and public media libraries. Alongside stereotypical, discriminatory, and exclusionary representations, they also encounter productions that offer alternative and emancipatory perspectives. This workshop introduces participants to anti-discrimination approaches to film and television education. Using series such as Uncivilized<\/em>, Schwarze Fr\u00fcchte<\/em>, and Friends as case studies, participants learn to identify and critically examine problematic representations and dominant narratives. They will reflect on their personal viewing habits and explore practical methods for encouraging young people to engage critically with audiovisual media. Through both individual and collaborative analysis of selected film clips, participants will develop analytical skills while engaging in discussion and shared reflection.

Canan Turan is a film scholar, dramaturg, curator, and moderator. Her work explores how cinema and television reproduce or challenge dominant narratives and visual cultures, and how they can open up emancipatory perspectives on history, society, and identity. She pursues these questions through her writing, her podcast film.macht.kritisch.<\/em><\/a>, as well as workshops and public lectures. She directed the short film K\u0131ymet <\/em>(2012) and served as Creative Producer of the documentary From Here (2020). Since 2023, she has been a member of the Berlinale Generation selection committee. She is currently developing FILM\/POWER!, <\/strong>an academy and community dedicated to critical film literacy and the analysis of power and discrimination in audiovisual culture.
