Panel “Cinema and Censorship”

Art has always been political, holding a mirror to society and to those in power, questioning dogma and requiring authenticity. So it’s no wonder that the film sector has over and over again faced enormous political pressure

Saturday, 30.9., 5.00 p.m., Festsaal

Censorship continues to play an important role in many countries. Unwanted voices are suppressed, films are removed from the market and festivals are told which films they can or cannot select.
We will discuss the current global situation with Lena Hendry from Malaysia who was fined this year because had screened a film at her human rights film festival that was not acceptable to the powers-that-be. Alankrita Shrivastava’s film LIPSTICK UNDER MY BURKHA was initially accused of being too “lady-oriented”
by the censors in India. Somebody who is involved in Turkey’s independent film scene will discuss the increasing repression in her home country.

Moderation: Dr. Grit Lemke
